Upholstery workshop – cancelled

Our workshops are designed for beginners looking for a one-day taster course to find out if upholstery is for them and those committed to a larger project.

For beginners, a footstool, dining chair with drop in seat or piano stool are ideal and can be completed on a one-day course. If you are working on a bigger project, just choose the dates that suit you. Specialist tools such as staplers, needles and button making equipment will be available to borrow.

You are welcome to visit any course before deciding if these workshops are for you. We are available to provide advice and discuss what you would like to achieve. Be inspired by the wide variety of chairs that are brought along for rejuvenation. We really believe that you learn from each other and not just from the tutors. Enjoy the chat and homemade cakes!

  • There is parking on site and easy access to the venue
  • You will be working on your own piece of furniture
  • Before coming, take off all the old materials and make sure there are no wobbly joints
  • An ideal frame is made of “proper” wood because MDF and veneered wood can be difficult to work with
  • Bring your final fabric and any trimmings. Follow this link for more information
  • We will provide tuition, a set of tools and all the materials to re-construct your furniture
  • These materials can be purchased during the workshop (approx cost £10)
  • The sets of tools provided for your use have been checked and cleaned prior to the workshop
  • Bring a picnic lunch and your own mug – we will provide cake, tea and coffee

Upholstery at Melville Castle

This upholstery workshop is held in the comfort and luxury of Melville Castle Hotel.

Our workshops are for beginners looking for a one day taster course or those committed to a larger project. All skills levels welcome to our small classes that are in easy reach of Edinburgh.

With this “mix and match” way of running a workshop, be inspired by the wide variety of chairs that are brought along for rejuvenation. We really believe that you can learn from each other and not just from the tutors. You will learn traditional skills working to professional standards.

Find out if upholstery works for you. Bring a piece of furniture, your fabric and any final trimming, such as braid or nailstrip. We provide all the tools. The materials like webbing, felt, calico and nails are provided for a small additional charge.

A footstool, dining chair with drop in seat or piano stool can be completed in one day. Before you come, strip off all the old materials and make sure there are no wobbly joints. Ideally, your frame should be made of “proper” wood because mdf and veneered wood can be difficult to work with and an easy project to start with is always a good idea!

If you have a bigger project in mind – perhaps four days – just choose the dates that suit you best. Beginners as well as those who have already done some upholstery will be very welcome.

You might already have basic tools, have chosen your fabric and have a supply of everything else you need. In addition, specialist tools such as staplers, needles and button making equipment will be available to use, as well as a sewing machine.

Some additional materials will be available for purchase during the course.

The day includes a lovely lunch, and tea, coffee etc on arrival and mid afternoon.

Look at our website (upholsterachair.co.uk) and our Facebook page to get an idea of work previous students have achieved.

You are welcome to visit any course before you commit to one or more upholstery days and we are always available to provide advice and discuss what you would like to achieve.
